Fiji Islands
For Australians, the Islands of Fiji are probably the most popular of the pacific Islands for a holiday. More than likely, this is because Fiji has so many resorts to choose from and the airfares are usually cheaper. The Fijian Islands are magnificent. Imagine an archipelago of over 300 islands set in calm tropical sea. Coconut palms fringe the beach and the seas are a scuba divers paradise with a myriad coral reefs and caves to explore. The islands are home to some of the Pacific’s best tourist resorts and the locals never stop smiling. All of this and only about four hours flying time from Australia’s east coast. You could be there tomorrow you wanted. Fiji is so easy to get to from Australia, New Zealand or the USA because practically every trans Pacific flight lands at Nadi to refuel.
Fiji’s largest island is Viti Levu. It is the home of the capital of Suva as well as the international airport at Nadi. There are beautiful resorts all over and around the island. The Coral Coast in the islands south west is centered around the town of Sigatoka. This section of coastline is famous for the beautiful scenery, fantastic beaches and resorts that have been built here. On the west coast is Nadi and it also has a wide range of resorts. The Denarau region is an island that is connected to Viti Levu by a causeway and there are plenty of sensational resorts here too. Port Denarau is the home of many cruise and charter boats and the ideal place to visit if you are looking for great aquatic activities. There is also a beautiful resort style golf course at Denarau. This entire section of Fiji’s coastline is a procession of one beautiful beach after another. Just off the coast on the western side are two groups of islands that are home to beautiful island resorts. These are the Mamanuka Islands and the Yasawa Islands. Some of the activities you can engage in here include surfing, diving, fishing and beachcombing on the perfect beaches of these beautiful islands.
The second largest island in the Fijian archipelago in Vanua Levu. Savu Savu is the largest town here and once more, beautiful resorts are the order of the day. Tavanui Island is the third largest of the group and you can fly here from Nadi. Ferry services also provide inter island transfers for tourists and locals alike.
Fiji was first visited by Captain James Cook and prior to that had been colonised during the great Polynesian migration that started over 2000 years ago. These people migrated through most of the Pacific Islands over a long period of time moving from island to island aboard huge double hulled canoes. They were also the first visitors to New Zealand which they also colonised. Today, Fiji is a modern country. It is governed at present by a military dictator who seized power several years ago. His rule however, does not stop or hinder the local tourism industry which is the islands main source of foreign revenue. In 2010, After the global financial crisis, Fiji tourism has been very popular due to many holiday package specials that have been very competitive.
If you still haven’t visited the Pacific Islands for a holiday, then consider coming to Fiji for a well earned break.
